I was thinking about the quote that goes something like this: “Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark; professionals built the Titanic.” And at first, it seems very clever and very motivating and very true; it makes such a good point. However, I watched this documentary a while back called Titanic’s Final Mystery (from the Smithsonian Channel) and now this motivational saying doesn’t quite make sense.
The quote only makes sense if the main reason that the Titanic sank is because of faulty building or that somehow the way it was built was part of the problem. Based on the documentary, that was very much not the case. The Titanic was built amazingly well. It was said that if the Titanic had hit the iceberg head-on, it would not have sunk.
So yes, amateurs built the ark and professionals built the Titanic but that doesn’t really have anything to do with the fact that one floated and one sank after hitting an iceberg. Maybe if the ark had hit the same iceberg in the same way, then perhaps it would have sunk as well.
I guess a better saying would be “Never be afraid to try something new. You never know what might happen!” 🙂
P.S. Titanic’s Final Mystery was an extremely interesting documentary, I’d recommend it.
