Today is World Stroke Day. Here are some facts:
Stroke is basically a brain attack. It is damage to the brain from interruption of its blood supply. It is the 5th leading cause of death in the US.
Signs/Symptoms: F.A.S.T. F=Face (half of the face will droop). A=Arm (an arm that is weak). S = Speech (hard to speak/slurred words). T=Time (call 911, don’t waste any time).
Prevention: Up to 80% of strokes are preventable. High blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking are major risk factors. Healthy eating and physical activity help reduce the risk. If you drink, drink in moderation (2 drinks per day for men, 1 drink per day for women). If you have sleep apnea, diabetes or other medical conditions make sure you monitor and treat them as much as possible.
