Book Review: The Pawn by Steven James

The Pawn

Good serial killer book. Very interesting. This is actually the first of a series and even though I loved it, I didn’t read the others in the series. This book can work as a stand-alone but I would imagine the others in the series are just as satisfying.

  1. I liked the direction of The Pawn as the plot developed early, but to me it seemed as if the author tried to include too many twists and turns in the story.

My biggest hang-up with the book is that there were too many “that couldn’t happen” moments. The killer seemed to be an expert at everything. He also had to be the luckiest person in the world to get out of some of the jams that he encountered.

There were a few dialog errors and other writing discrepancies throughout the book, but not enough to be a distraction.

Overall, there were parts of the story that I enjoyed. The pace was good. I grew to like the protagonist – he was believable and well developed. Nevertheless, the few areas that I mentioned here left me wanting something more. That’s a shame because the story had real potential.

I will probably check out the next book in the series just to see how the series progresses.

Just my humble opinion, which you know what they say about opinions. .

    1. There are definitely some stories that like to put in the “couldn’t happen” or “wouldn’t happen” scenes, but I usually just go with them – they are fiction books after all. But I can definitely see where that could get annoying. Let me know if you end up liking the next book more and maybe I’ll find myself a copy!
